A message from the Chancellor

Why do thousands of students from every county in Nebraska, and from approximately 40 states across the nation and 50 different countries around the world, choose to be here? The answer is simple!

For many, it’s our commitment to academic excellence. Our students choose from more than 170 undergraduate degree options, 20 pre-professional programs, and 45 graduate programs in a variety of fields including education, business, fine arts and humanities, and the natural sciences. They collaborate with more than 300 distinguished full-time faculty members passionate about teaching. And as many as two-thirds of them receive some form of financial aid.

For many others, it’s the powerful combination of big-university opportunities and a friendly, small-community campus setting. We are a public, residential, mid-sized, comprehensive university with a special emphasis on undergraduate education located in Kearney, Nebraska—a small, safe, and vibrant town that is a regional hub of culture and commerce. Our students not only enjoy an intensely personalized academic experience but also participate in an extensive array of extracurricular activities that includes more than 150 student organizations, a nationally-respected music and performing arts program, and a highly successful intercollegiate athletics program. Not surprisingly, our graduates become well-rounded leaders in every field you can think of.

Whatever their motivation to come, our students tell us they stay because there’s something unforgettable about UNK. They say it’s a sense of belonging difficult to describe yet easy to experience. In the warmth of the welcome they receive when they arrive and the ease with which they become part of this community... in the friendships they build here... in their hurry to get back to campus once the holidays have ended. They tell us they are here because it feels like home.
