Campus Housing Information

Approximately 2,000 students live on-campus at UNK in eight traditional residence halls, two Greek complexes, and two apartment-style complexes. The Office of Residential and Greek Life coordinates all campus housing and is dedicated to maintaining an environment conducive to educational and personal development.

Each residence hall facility is supervised by a live-in Hall Director and is staffed by Resident Advisors who live on each floor.  All residence halls feature computer labs with access to the UNK mainframe computer network, lounges, kitchens, laundry facilities, quiet study areas, and recreational space.  All rooms are cable ready and provided with basic furnishings, and local phone service.

A variety of specific living environment options are available to students, including honors/academic floors, double or single rooms, co-ed by room floors, upperclassmen floors, and Greek fraternity or sorority houses. Smoking is not allowed in the residence halls, however many halls designate an outside area with benches for smoking.

Freshman Housing Policy

Please note that all full-time (registered for 12 credit hours or more) freshmen are required to live on-campus during their first year at the University.

Exemptions from the Freshman Housing Policy are made only for students who are:

  1. Living with his/her parents or legal guardians in the Kearney community (community is specified as within a 30-mile driving distance of UNK).
  2. 19 years old or older on the first day of fall semester classes.
  3. Married, a single parent, or has a documented medical/mental health condition which makes it impracticable to meet the freshman housing requirement, assuming that the student's needs can not be accommodated on-campus.
  4. Living in certain off-campus facilities which approximate the educational advantages of residence hall living and meet requirements listed under the "Documentation Required" section listed in the Freshman Housing Policy.

If the freshman student meets the above requirements and wishes to file a request for exemption, please contact the Office of Residential and Greek Life for the proper form, or click [here ] to print the form.

General Room Information

Putting together a room with your roommate can be exciting and rewarding.  There are many ways you can make your new residence feel like home.  We allow decorations and furnishings that do not deface the room or create hazards for you and your hall mates.  Some items for discussion with your roommate might be:  television, telephone, audio equipment, carpet, trash can, compact fridge.

Each double occupancy room comes equipped with:

  • two twin beds
  • two desks
  • two desk chairs
  • closet and dresser space
  • window coverings
  • one telephone outlet
  • one cable TV outlet
  • two computer ports for direct connection

Beds can be bunked or lofted to maximize floor space, but UNK does have requirements for loft specifications.  If you wish to construct your own loft, click [here ] to view the Loft/Bunk Policy.

Break Housing

The residence halls close for Thanksgiving break, Winter break, and Spring break.  Students living on campus are not allowed to remain in the residence halls during the breaks unless they reside in a designated break hall.  The current break halls are Antelope/Nester Complex, CTE, Randall,  and Men's halls.  For those students who do not live in a break hall, but need to remain on campus during the breaks, we may have limited temporary spaces available for an additional charge.  Such spaces are not guaranteed and are on a first-come, first-serve basis only.  We strongly suggest that students try to anticipate their break needs ahead of time and request to live in a break hall if necessary, rather than try to arrange costly last-minute break accommodations.  Contact the Office of Residential and Greek Life for more information.

Summer Housing

Housing for students attending the summer sessions is available on a limited basis.  Click [here ] to view/print the Summer Housing Reservation Form (information regarding dates and room rates are on this form).

Note:  If a student attended UNK during the spring semester and is registered for the fall semester, he/she is not required to be enrolled in summer classes to be allowed to stay in summer housing.  However, please keep in mind that if an extraordinarily large number of students request summer housing which causes room availability to be tight, assignment priority will be given to those students who are enrolled for the summer sessions.

Facility Information

Thorough inspections of residence halls have been completed to determine the presence of asbestos and lead based paint materials.  Asbestos and lead based paints are safe when left undisturbed.   Generally asbestos may be present in floor tiles, sprayed ceilings of the towers and plumbing insulation.  To ensure your safety, do not drill into, chip, break apart, sand, carve, cut into, or in any way disturb your floor, ceiling, pipe insulation, hand rails (stairwells) and glazed ceramic block tile (bathrooms and hallways).  These activities are strictly prohibited as outlined in the Residential and Greek Life Handbook Room Personalization section.  Specific detailed locations of substances can be viewed in the Residential and Greek Life or Facilities Management & Planning Offices.  Please report any instances where you observe floor tiles or sprayed ceilings to be recently disturbed.  Additionally complete work orders available at your hall front desk (area) for any maintenance requests in your room and living areas within the hall.
